UK Launches ‘Innovator Passports’ to Accelerate NHS Digital Transformation

New initiative aims to fast-track proven medical technologies across NHS hospitals

London, UK. In a bold step to modernize healthcare delivery, the UK government has announced the launch of “Innovator Passports”, a new initiative designed to help the NHS adopt effective digital health technologies faster by cutting through bureaucratic red tape and streamlining compliance processes.

The move is part of the government’s “Plan for Change” and 10 Year Health Plan, which aims to empower patients, drive innovation, and create a future-ready National Health Service.

“These innovator passports will save time and reduce duplication,” said Wes Streeting, Secretary of State for Health and Social Care. “Our life sciences sector, a central part of our 10-Year Health Plan can work hand in hand with the health service and make Britain a powerhouse for medical technology.”

Faster Access to Proven Technologies

The Innovator Passport will be delivered through MedTech Compass, a new digital platform developed by the Department of Health and Social Care (DHSC). The platform will allow health innovators to showcase their approved technologies, helping NHS trusts identify and implement effective solutions more efficiently.

Under this initiative, medical technologies that have already demonstrated measurable success such as advanced wound dressings that cut surgical site infections by 38% at Barking, Havering & Redbridge University Hospitals could be adopted more broadly across the NHS.

Driving Efficiency and Impact

The initiative tackles one of the biggest barriers to healthcare innovation in the UK: fragmented adoption pathways and redundant compliance requirements. By eliminating multiple assessments and aligning regulatory processes across NHS systems, the Innovator Passport will accelerate the journey from lab to bedside.

“We want to make sure NHS patients can benefit from the latest medical technology and innovations as well,” said Dr. Vin Diwakar, Clinical Transformation Director at NHS England. “The new innovator passports will speed up the roll-out of new health technology in the NHS which has been proven to be effective, so that patients can benefit from new treatments much sooner.”

Strengthening the UK’s Life Sciences Sector

Beyond patient care, the initiative is a boost for the UK’s life sciences and healthtech industry, creating a more predictable and scalable path for market-ready innovations to reach national adoption.

By enabling innovators to bypass repetitive compliance assessments, the passport also reduces development friction, making the UK a more attractive market for digital health investment and global medtech companies.
