Beacon Health System Finalizes Acquisition of Ascension Hospitals in Southwest Michigan
Expansion marks Beacon’s entry into Michigan, grows network to 11 hospitals and 190 care sites
South Bend, Indiana / Kalamazoo, Michigan. Non-profit health system Beacon Health System has completed its acquisition of Ascension’s Southwest Michigan hospitals and related healthcare facilities, marking a major expansion into Michigan and reinforcing its commitment to regional healthcare access and quality.
The acquisition, originally announced in April, includes four hospitals, 35 clinics, and over 2,700 employees, including 259 providers. With this move, Beacon now operates 11 hospitals and approximately 190 care sites, significantly extending its footprint beyond Indiana and deepening its regional care capabilities.
“This acquisition represents our continued commitment to strengthening healthcare in our region,” said Kreg Gruber, CEO of Beacon Health System. “Our patients will benefit from access to an expanded network of services and providers.”
Improving Access, Expanding Partnerships
Beacon Health emphasized that the deal will allow for enhanced access to specialized care in Michigan, improved operational efficiency, and stronger talent recruitment across its growing network. As part of the transition, Beacon is also entering a strategic partnership with Western Michigan University’s medical school, aimed at supporting medical education and expanding the pipeline of healthcare professionals in the region.
“Our commitment to exceptional care is what makes our organization strong, and now together with our new associates and providers, we’re stronger than ever,” Gruber added.
Locally Governed, Community Driven
As a locally governed nonprofit, Beacon Health System reiterated its dedication to community-focused care. The organization aims to maintain the legacy of Ascension’s facilities while integrating them into Beacon’s mission of delivering “outstanding care, inspiring health, and connecting with heart.”
The acquisition aligns with broader trends in the U.S. healthcare sector, where regional consolidation is being used as a strategy to increase access, streamline services, and ensure long-term sustainability for non-profit health systems.
What’s Next
With the integration of the Southwest Michigan facilities, Beacon Health System is now positioned as a leading regional provider in the Midwest, serving patients across a wider geographic footprint with comprehensive care services spanning primary care, specialty treatment, and community outreach.
