Southern Railway Launches Telemedicine Network for Remote Healthcare Access
In a major stride toward digital healthcare, Southern Railway has rolled out a robust telemedicine network, linking its divisional hospitals and remote health units directly with the Headquarters Hospital at Perambur. Developed under the Government of Indiaβs flagship e-Sanjeevani scheme, this state-of-the-art facility is designed to dramatically improve access to specialist and super-specialist medical care for railway personnel in far-flung locations.
The system was officially inaugurated by Southern Railway General Manager R N Singh at the Perambur headquarters. As part of the launch, Singh took part in a live video consultation with doctors at the Divisional Railway Hospital in Madurai, showcasing the real-time capabilities of the platform.
Powered by high-speed internet, the telemedicine facility allows remote health units to share diagnostics like ECGs and X-rays instantly and consult directly with experts in Perambur. This real-time interaction accelerates clinical decisions and enhances the quality of patient care, a model that proved especially vital during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Notably, this is the first initiative of its kind across Indian Railways to implement such a comprehensive, connected care system. Officials highlighted the importance of expanding high-speed connectivity to all railway health units to maximize the systemβs reach and reliability.
During his visit, Singh also inspected newly installed digital queue management tools and upgraded signage at the Outpatient Department (OPD) block, underscoring Southern Railwayβs broader commitment to tech-enabled healthcare transformation.
