Union Home Minister Amit Shah announced that Indiaโs health budget has risen from INR 37,000 crore in 2014 to INR 1.37 trillion in 2025โ26. Speaking in Pune, he highlighted major improvements in medical education, healthcare access through Ayushman Bharat, and nationwide health initiatives like Fit India and Jan Aushadhi.
At the ground-breaking ceremony of the Poona Hospital and Research Centre (PHRC) Health City project in Pune, Union Home Minister Amit Shah emphasized the Modi governmentโs commitment to transforming healthcare in India. He highlighted that the national health budget, which stood at INR 37,000 crore before 2014, has surged to INR 1.37 trillion in the 2025โ26 Union Budget a nearly four-fold increase.
Shah described the governmentโs approach as โholistic and well-planned,โ with a strong focus on both infrastructure development and accessibility. A key area of progress, he said, is medical education and research. Since 2014, the number of AIIMS institutions has grown from 7 to 23, medical colleges from 387 to 780, MBBS seats from 51,000 to 1.80 lakh, and postgraduate seats from 31,000 to 74,000.

The Home Minister also reflected on recent milestones, including the inauguration of the BGS Medical College and a 1,000-bed super-specialty hospital in Bengaluru. Developed by Sri Adichunchanagiri Mahasamsthana Math, the INR 200 crore project spans 17 acres and underscores the governmentโs focus on expanding advanced medical infrastructure.
Shah reaffirmed the success of the Ayushman Bharat scheme, which now provides free medical treatment up to INR 5 lakh for 60 crore economically weaker citizens. He further noted initiatives such as the Fit India Movement, International Yoga Day, Poshan Abhiyan, and the expansion of over 15,000 Jan Aushadhi Kendras offering affordable generic medicines.
โThese are not isolated schemes they are part of a broader vision to build a healthier, more resilient India,โ Shah concluded.
